Recruitment News:

Specials – route into the police

The recruitment of Special police officers has remained buoyant with 13 forces currently looking for new recruits.
Specials are volunteer officers who must be at least 18 years old and able to volunteer for police duties for four hours a week. Full training is given and they have full police powers.
The government recently announced plans to increase the number of Specials. Increasingly forces are recruiting regular officers from their Special Constabulary. In September, the Metropolitan Police Authority debated the idea of drawing most of its new recruits from the ranks of its Special Constabulary.
“The feeling within forces is that becoming a special is a route to becoming a regular. Although at present, it’s not a requirement, there’s no doubt that many forces are looking very closely at this.”
“Becoming a special officer is an excellent opportunity to experience policing first hand and discover if it really is for you. Many people remain as Specials, but equally many eventually go on to join the regular service. And when forces begin recruiting again which, in time, they will Specials are well placed to apply to become a regular police officer.”
In addition to Specials, twelve forces are looking for volunteers including roles ranging from IT, museum curator, neighbourhood policing and custody visitor.
