Job Title: Assistant Facial Image Examiner

Salary: The starting salary is £43,227, which includes allowances totalling £2,841.

The salary is broken down as £40,386 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £45,615.  Plus, a location allowance of £1,841 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

Location:  The role is primarily based in Lambeth HQ, you may also on occasion be required to work from alternative locations dependant on operational need.

 

We are looking to recruit two Assistant Facial Image Examiners who will assist the Senior and Reporting Facial Image Examiners.

Facial Image Examiners provide expert opinion on the facial identification of an unknown subject when compared to a known individual.

The role of an Assistant Facial Image Examiner is varied and complex. You will undertake detailed facial comparison casework including providing technical assessment of image quality, processing imagery, the examination and comparison of facial feature detail and setting strategies for casework. Due to the nature of police work, the imagery you examine may include distressing material. You will need to articulate your findings to fellow practitioners and non-practitioners. You will also provide advice and guidance to customers and stakeholders, including police officers. 

You may be required to undertake other duties in your role, including enhancing imagery, taking on mentoring and line management responsibilities, delivering presentations and assisting with projects relating to facial image comparison.

In all of this you will ensure that the requirements of the forensic services quality management systems are met, with the aim of achieving ISO17025 accreditation. You will be required to complete continual competency and proficiency testing, attend training courses and take responsibility for your own professional development.

Key Activities:

  • Use professional judgement in assessing image quality and suitability for facial comparison.
  • Use specialist knowledge and expertise to enhance digital imagery to maximise forensic potential.
  • Manage and organise casework in accordance with service level agreements and operational demands, always prioritising and working towards meeting agreed deadlines.
  • Liaise with stakeholders to devise forensic strategies.
  • Work within the Directorate’s Quality Management System and actively participate in the continuous improvement of the system by engaging in audits, reporting non-conformances, and suggesting changes to improve the system.
  • Assist in the creation and development of Standard Operating procedures, partake in the validation of methods, and complete staff competency and proficiency testing with the aim of achieving ISO17025 accreditation.
  • Provide advice to customers and stakeholders and assist the Senior and Reporting Facial Image Examiner’s to mentor and train others.
  • Stay up to date with new research and advances in the field of forensic facial image comparison and input on internal and external projects when the need arises.
  • The role holder may be required to line manage.
  • Understand and accept the core principles set out in the H&S Policy in relation to your role, duties and responsibilities and implement those principles and requirements in day-to-day activities.
  • Expected to work within the Forensic Service Quality Management System and actively contribute to the continuous improvement of the system by participating in quality assurance activities, engaging in internal and external audits, competence and proficiency tests, reporting non-conformances and proposing changes to improve the system.
