Job Title: Private Secretary (to an Assistant Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner)

Salary: The starting salary is £57,301 which includes allowances totalling £2,841.

The salary is broken down as £54,460 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £66,356 Plus, a location allowance of £1,841 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

Location: New Scotland Yard

About the Role 

The Private Secretary will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of the private office function on behalf of their principal – a member of the Met’s management board.

This role is varied, interesting, and demanding. You will represent your principal, working with the Principal Private Secretary to resolve the most urgent issues within and beyond the organisation, and manage a small team and office who directly support your principal.

Above all, this is a role that requires outstanding leadership, organisation and stakeholder handling skills.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Overseeing the delivery of your principal’s agenda
  • Delivering a first class private office service to your principal, with effective systems, processes and ways of working to provide first rate support to all principals.
  • Representing your principal and having the confidence and credibility to intervene and act as a trouble-shooter to resolve issues and tensions
  • Developing and maintaining highly influential and effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including Commanders and Deputy Assistant Commissioner’s MOPAC, and your colleagues across private office
  • Leading a team of people in the Private Office team, including Personal assistants/diary managers and staff officers
  • Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with the Principal Private Secretary. Chief of Staff,  Head of External Relations, Management Board Secretariat, Communication and Engagement teams and other key internal stakeholders
  • Developing and maintaining highly influential and effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, across the MPS, National policing, with Home Office, No10, Cabinet Office and MOPAC in line with Principals portfolio responsibilities
  • Acting as part of the Private Office Extended SLT
