Job Title: Principal Private Secretary (to Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and Head of Private Office)

Salary: The starting salary is £76,843 which includes allowances totalling £2,841.

The salary is broken down as £74,002 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £85,474 Plus, a location allowance of £1,841 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

Location: New Scotland Yard

About the Role 

The Principal Private Secretary will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioners’ agenda and running their private offices along with the offices of all ACs and Chief Officers. 

This role is varied, interesting, and demanding. You will represent the Commissioner and Deputy, resolving the most urgent issues within and beyond the organisation, and oversee private office support to all of the organisation’s most senior staff.

Above all, this is a role that requires outstanding leadership, organisation and stakeholder handling skills.

Key responsibilities

  • Overseeing the delivery of the Commissioner’s and Deputy Commissioner’s agenda;
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of a new Private Office group to support all Management and Chief officers and overseeing the transition of private office group into Strategy
  • Line management responsibilities for Senior Staff officers/Private Secretaries within Management and Chief officer group
  • Management of all Private Offices budgets and local resource management arrangements including training and succession planning arrangements
  • Ensuring effective systems, processes are maintained to provide first rate support to all Principals, ensuring:
  • Working alongside the Senior Staff Officer the Commissioner’s and Deputy Commissioner’s to ensure an effective and efficient private office capability is maintained in support of both Principals
  • The development, implementation and maintenance of business continuity and information management policies.  Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, codes of practice, force policies and procedures following good practice and encouraging transparency Representing the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner at key meetings and having the confidence and credibility to intervene, act as a trouble-shooter to resolve issues and tensions
  • Developing and maintaining highly influential and effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, across the MPS, national policing, with Home Office, No10, Cabinet Office and MOPAC
  • Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with the Chief of Staff,  Head of External relations, Management Board Secretariat, Communication and Engagement teams and other key internal stakeholders
  • Acting as part of the Strategy and Extended SLT
