RS592 Forensic Collision Investigator (Entry Level) *External*

THIS VACANCY HAS BEEN ADVERTISED EXTERNALLY

Forensic Collision Investigators (Entry Level)
Regional Scientific Support Services
Yorkshire and Humber Region

West Yorkshire Police, the lead Force for the Yorkshire and the Humber Regional Scientific Support Services (RSSS), is looking to recruit trainee Forensic Collision Investigators (FCI). Part of West Yorkshire Police, the RSSS provides forensic collision investigation services to the Yorkshire and Humber Police Forces. FCIs work regionally but operate from one of four bases: Melton (near Hull), Sheffield, Thirsk, and Wakefield. The service covers the whole of the Yorkshire and Humber region (bisected by three of the north’s busiest motorways) - an area covering close to 5000 square miles with a population of over 5 million. Our experts attend scenes ranging from single vehicle collisions on country lanes, to multi-vehicle incidents on motorways.

The role of an operational FCI is to attend the scene of fatal, and potentially fatal, collisions, as well as other vehicle related incidents. Using cutting edge techniques and technology, the role also involves collecting and collating evidence, and producing reports for presentation to Coroner’s Courts, the Criminal Justice System (CJS) and related third parties.

The key requirements…
• The ability to attain a City & Guilds, or equivalent, qualification in forensic collision investigation - sound mathematical ability and an understanding of physics is, therefore, essential.
• A relevant qualification in, or experience of, all types of modern motor vehicle technology, construction, and function, and ideally some knowledge of the law relating to such vehicles.
• A full current UK driving licence.

Additionally, you will have the physical and emotional resilience to deal with protracted hours at outdoor scenes, which at times may be distressing.

Remuneration and Training

Located at the Wakefield base, the RSSS is equipped with a dedicated training centre for FCIs. Upon initial appointment, as a trainee, you will be invited to attend the training centre to complete a City & Guilds assured qualification in forensic collision investigation. Here you would remain until ready to work an operational shift pattern in one of our regional bases.

The starting salary, whilst in training, will be within the range £33,915 to £35,982 per annum. During this period, you will work from the Wakefield base on a Monday to Friday arrangement. There will be no additional shift or weekend working during this period.

As part of a career progression scheme, those appointed will be expected to develop to an advanced level. This would attract a salary within the range £36,996 to £39,036 per annum. Subject to base location and working arrangements, you may also be entitled to a shift enhancement of up to 20% and a weekend working allowance.

Once fully trained and competent, you will contribute to an operational working shift pattern – this will vary dependent upon base location. Outside of normal shift/working hours, FCIs are also expected to contribute to ‘on call’ working; published on a pre-planned rota.

Employment benefits include a generous annual leave allowance, which increases with service, and a Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS).

Application Process

Applicants successful at the shortlisting stage will be invited to assessment to measure mathematical and mechanical ability; a maths screening/mechanical examination. Applicants successful at the screening stage will be invited to a one-day selection centre.

Within the career progression scheme, based on the role entry requirements, the starting salary for appointed candidates will normally be at the bottom scale-point of the grade. Progression through the scheme will be subject to attainment of a specific qualification and/or successful assessment/review.

Closing date for applications: 23:55 hours on 19th May 2024.
